To keep the school on top for years to come, a range of new buildings were constructed featuring EcoTherm Eco-Versal in both roof and wall applications. Following its transition to an Academy in 2010, the Royal Military School expanded entry to civilian families for the first time. In order to provide an additional 250 student spaces, the existing school buildings were refurbished and expanded. A further seven additional blocks were built by main contractors BAM Construction, including two new two-storey teaching blocks; junior dormitories and a state of the art sports hall.
Fitted between and over the roof battens, Eco-Versal provided a lightweight insulation solution which was easy to handle and could be cut to fit simply and quickly with a hand saw or sharp knife.
Faced with aluminium foil composite, EcoTherm Eco-Versal is a versatile rigid insulation board and can also be used on floors, walls, dormer cheeks and ceilings. With a thermal conductivity of 0.022 W/mK, the product helped to reduce the build-up thickness required to achieve a compliant U-value. EcoTherm Eco-Versal also helped contribute towards the building’s interim BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’.
Roe Timberframe Ltd used EcoTherm Eco-Versal within the wall panels of their structural timber frame buildings, which were then clad by Roe Brickwork Ltd with brick facades to the teaching and dormitory buildings.
In addition to providing new education facilities such as a “super science laboratory”, the new master plan from architects Scott Brownrigg also included the demolition of several badly worn 1960’s teaching blocks, greatly improving the setting for the historic school buildings.
''EcoTherm Eco-Versal provided the thermal performance we required with a slim insulation thickness. This allowed the boards to be easily and quickly factory fitted in the timber frame wall panels compared to some other commonly used insulants."
