EcoTherm® is providing energy saving roof insulation for a new extension to the IKEA store in Wembley, North West London. Eco-Fix roofboard from EcoTherm®’s high performance polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation range is part of a warm roof construction with a waterproofing membrane and vapour control layer from single ply roofing specialist, Flag-Soprema. The extension’s 2,100m2 flat roof is designed to follow the profile of the adjoining existing building to create a sense of continuity.
Norfolk-based Gale Construction is completing roofing and cladding for the project on behalf of management contractors R G Group. In advising on the roof specification, Flag-Soprema recommended EcoTherm®’s thermally efficient insulation, having worked successfully with EcoTherm® on many previous contracts. EcoTherm®’s PIR solution offers the highest insulation values from the minimum thickness of material and satisfies the thermal requirements of UK building regulations and SAP compliance. In the metal deck construction at IKEA Wembley, 90mm Eco-Fix roofboard has been specified to give a U-value of 0.25m2k/W as specified for the project.
Eco-Fix rigid PIR insulation boards, mechanically fixed to the roof’s metal deck, are installed in conjunction with Flag-Soprema’s Sopravap superior strength vapour barrier and Flagon EP/PR TPO waterproofing membrane, which has high weather and UV resistance. Designing the roof with the insulation above the deck and a vapour control layer ensures high thermal efficiency and keeps the deck ‘warm’, so reducing the risk of condensation forming as moist air rises from the occupied space below.
EcoTherm®’s Eco-Fix insulation board provides the ideal base for mechanically fixed single ply waterproofing membranes like the high performance Flag-Soprema system used for the IKEA store extension. Eco-Fix is faced with aluminium foil on both sides and supplied in 2,400mm x 1,200mm size boards. EcoTherm® lightweight PIR roofboards have a high strength to weight ratio that makes them easy to handle and install, and they are extremely durable, which ensures that their energy saving properties remain undiminished over the complete life of the building.
Being CFC and HCFC free and offering zero ozone depletion potential, Eco-Fix also complements the environmentally-friendly roofing system used on the project. Flagon TPO membranes have a certified BRE Green Guide A+ rating and have a life expectancy of over 30 years. In addition, EcoTherm® PIR insulation boards have a Global Warming Potential of 3, well below the target limit of 5, and their indefinite life - when correctly installed - ensures a highly sustainable insulation solution for both new build and refurbishment applications.
With production facilities across Europe, and a brand new high-capacity line at its plant in Essex, EcoTherm® supplies its product range in the UK through insulation distributors and builders’ merchants nationwide.
