The high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent thermal performance of EcoTherm® polyisocyanurate (PIR) roof board have won top marks from a college building project in Berkshire. Over 3,000m2 of tapered Glass-Therm rigid insulation boards are being used in flat roof constructions for the new Bracknell & Wokingham College. Building Innovation Ltd of Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, has designed the project’s complex tapered insulation system, consisting of fourteen roofs ranging in size from 23m2 to 598m2. Specialists in the design, fabrication and supply of tapered insulation solutions, Building Innovation can offer bespoke solutions utilising the best choice of insulant to meet clients’ performance and budget criteria.
With a strong, yet lightweight PIR foam core, EcoTherm®’s Glass-Therm has played a key role in meeting the project’s design criteria for an overall u-value of 0.25W/m2K. The specification also called for Glass-Therm boards in tapered format to create a fall of 1 in 80 to ensure efficient drainage to rainwater outlets. Bracknell-based Angus Roofing Ltd installed tapered Glass-Therm insulation boards in eleven roofs as part of a fully bonded single ply roofing system on concrete decks with a 1.2mm waterproof PVC membrane above. In addition, Building Innovation also supplied a tapered extruded polystyrene insulation system for three roof terraces.
EcoTherm® Glass-Therm is a rigid foam insulation board with a mineral-coated glass-fibre tissue on both sides. Lightweight and easy to handle, the high performance boards are compatible with fully adhered or mechanically-fixed single ply non-bituminous membranes. They can be used on concrete and metal decks and are available in a wide range of thicknesses from 30mm to 150mm, and a choice of 600mm or 1,200mm widths, and lengths of 1,200mm or 2,400mm, to suit different project specifications.
Glass-Therm insulation roofing boards carry a BRE Green Guide “A Grade” rating and easily meet the thermal requirements of all UK Building Regulations. They are CFC- and HCFC- free and zero ozone-depleting (ODP). When correctly installed, Glass-Therm has an indefinite life
Costing around £36 million, the new Bracknell & Wokingham College is being part funded by the Learning and Skills Council. The eight-storey building will provide a modern, well equipped replacement for the College’s current 1960s facility and incorporates a number of eco-friendly design features such as geothermal heating and displacement ventilation. The first intake of students is scheduled to start in the new building at the beginning of the 2009/10 academic year.
With production facilities across Europe, and a brand new high-capacity line at its plant in Essex, EcoTherm® supplies its product range in the UK through insulation distributors and builders’ merchants nationwide.
