Lightweight and highly efficient Glass-Therm polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation board from EcoTherm® is at the heart of a Bradford supermarket roofing upgrade project. The 3,600m2 metal deck roof of Sainsbury’s Bradford store has been refurbished with the addition of 100mm thick Glass-Therm, supporting a polyisobutylene (PIB) outer membrane. As a result, the store’s thermal efficiency is improved.
The Bradford roof refurbishment contract was awarded to Wigan-based Tremco Europe, which is also the UK supplier of the 2mm Geoflex PIB membrane. Tremco’s Tony Hambleton says: “EcoTherm®’s Glass-Therm is the perfect partner for our product. Installing Glass-Therm is hassle-free, and it bonds well with Geoflex to form an effective and long-lasting weatherproof barrier with excellent thermal performance.”
Camille Wade, EcoTherm® Regional Sales Manager, says the additional insulation on the store’s roof will help to reduce energy requirements by reducing heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. “We believe the potential energy savings will offset the cost of the whole roof refurbishment.”
One of Europe’s leading roof boards, EcoTherm® Glass-Therm is CFC and HCFC free, with zero ozone depletion potential. It is produced for use with single-ply membranes and is compatible with mechanically fixed and fully adhered non-bituminous membranes. Glass-Therm consists of a rigid PIR foam core with clay filled glass fibre tissue on both faces. It is used to insulate flat roofs and provides an ideal base for high performance waterproofing systems.
Glass-Therm, like all (pentane blown) Rigid Urethane carries an BRE Green Guide “A Grade” rating and has a thermal conductivity (lambda value) of 0.027W/mK and the 100mm boards used at Greengates have a thermal resistance (R value) of 3.7m2k/W. Installed over a vapour control layer and waterproofed with a single ply membrane, 100mm Glass-Therm will give a typical U value of 0.25W/m2K. Correctly installed, Glass-Therm has an indefinite life – its durability depends on method of application, the supporting structure and conditions of use. Glass-Therm is available in 600mm or 1,200mm widths and 1,200mm or 2,400mm lengths. It is available in thicknesses from 30mm to 150mm.
Founded in 1928, Tremco is an international leader in polymer technology for sealants and coatings. It is part of the US-based Republic Powdered Metals Group, which manufactures Geoflex PIB single ply membranes for installation over non-nailable, low sloped roofs. Easy to install Geoflex is engineered to provide self-sealing seams with fleece backing for maximum performance. It is a highly reflective white membrane, which also contributes to reduced energy consumption.
With production facilities across Europe, and a brand new high-capacity line at its plant in Essex, EcoTherm® supplies its product range in the UK through insulation distributors and builders’ merchants nationwide.
