An exciting new residential and commercial development in Bedford’s conservation area includes EcoTherm®’s ultra-lightweight PIR (polyisocyanurate) roofing insulation technology throughout. The Castle Quay complex, situated close to the River Great Ouse and the town’s historic Castle Mound, comprises four insulated flat roof apartment blocks surrounding a courtyard parking area, three restaurants, and scope for further retail units.
EcoTherm® supplied its Foil-Therm PIR board through Sheffield Insulations, Bedford to roofing specialist CA Single Ply for the four main apartment blocks, and restaurants - which are topped with an eco-friendly “green” sedum roof - a total area of 550m2. The restaurants units’ roof structures are formed from metal decking supporting Foil-Therm boards and a PVC and glass-fibre sheet with a fleece separation layer, filter matting and a top layer of sedum. The four apartment blocks have similar roof constructions, but with ply roof decks rather than metal decking, ranging in area from 230m2 to 530m2.
The prestigious Castle Quay development is situated in Bedford’s cultural quarter, close to the town’s museums and art galleries, and the four terraces have been designed to blend with the other historic buildings in the area. Many of the 108 highly-specified apartments and all three restaurant units have south-facing aspects, overlooking the new archaeological park and the river.
EcoTherm®’s Marketing Manager, Dale Kaszycki, says, “Our ability to provide a speedy response was a key factor in winning this business. We offer contractors a unique combination of high performance products supported by first-class logistics and comprehensive customer support.”
EcoTherm® Foil-Therm insulation boards are designed for use with mechanically-fixed single ply membranes. They have a PIR core, are faced with supported aluminium foil on both sides and are supplied in standard 1,200mm by 2,400mm sheets. A 100mm Foil-Therm board waterproofed with a single layer membrane, as in the Castle Quay development, will typically give a U-value of 0.20W/m2k on a metal deck. EcoTherm rigid PIR boards offer the thinnest thermal insulation solution available, saving between a 33 – 50% of the thickness of mineral wool or expanded polystyrene for any given target U-value.
EcoTherm® is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of PIR boards for floors, cavity walls, flat roofs and pitched roofs. EcoTherm®’s range of products offers an ideal combination of exceptional thermal insulating properties, high strength and light weight, making for ease of transport, handling and installation, and allowing light supporting structures. The boards’ durability ensures their energy saving properties remain undiminished over the complete life of the building.
With production facilities across Europe, including a recently extended plant in Essex, EcoTherm® supplies its product range in the UK through insulation distributors and builders’ merchants nationwide.
