EcoTherm®’s polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation board is being used in the roof construction of Scottish Ballet’s new state-of-the-art headquarters. Almost 2,000m2 of EcoTherm®’s tapered Glass-Therm PIR boards have been installed to insulate the roof of the building, which features three large rehearsal studios and health and fitness areas, as well as wardrobe and music departments and office space.
Construction of the £11 million building, which is being built on a disused part of the existing Tramway arts venue site in Glasgow’s south side, began in late 2007 and is expected to be completed in spring 2009. Designed by award-winning Malcolm Fraser Architects, and built by support services and construction company Carillion, the building’s steel frame is clad externally at ground level with textured, coloured concrete panels, with anodised aluminium sheet for the upper storeys.
EcoTherm®’s Marketing Manager, Dale Kaszycki, says, “One of the architect’s main aims, particularly with a public building of this kind, is to reduce carbon emissions and running costs. Glass-Therm offers an ideal combination of energy-saving performance and cost-effectiveness, while EcoTherm®’s tapered board makes for a simpler roof structure, cutting time and cost.”
EcoTherm®’s Glass-Therm is a rigid foam insulation board with a mineral-coated glass-fibre tissue on both sides, suitable for fully bonded single ply membrane systems, and is compatible with most roof waterproofing systems. Glass-Therm roofing insulation boards easily meet the thermal requirements of all UK Building Regulations, are CFC- and HCFC- free and are zero ozone-depleting (ODP).
EcoTherm®’s tapered board is a simple and effective alternative to tapering the roof structure itself, saving time and money. It can be used to create a fall of 1 in 60, which is usually enough to cope with settlement in a new roof, or to reinstate a fall on an existing building where the roof has already settled and risks “ponding”.
EcoTherm® is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of PIR boards for floors, cavity walls, flat roofs and pitched roofs. These have become increasingly popular on commercial and industrial projects as they offer the ideal combination of exceptional insulating properties in the smallest thickness, high strength and light weight. This high strength to weight ratio makes them easy to handle and install, and allows light supporting structures. The boards are also extremely durable – which ensures that their energy saving properties remain undiminished over the complete life of the building.
With production facilities across Europe, and a brand new high-capacity line at its plant in Essex, EcoTherm® supplies its product range in the UK through insulation distributors and builders’ merchants nationwide.
