Building efficiency to meet 80% CO2 target
Among the recommendations for reaching the suggested target of cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 80 per cent was boosting the energy efficiency of buildings.
Improving the energy performance of domestic, commercial and industrial buildings will be essential in the years leading up to 2020, claims the CCC.
It suggests installing loft and cavity wall insulation, using more efficient appliances, turning appliances off and using less air conditioning.
While this will be an important measure, and Gordon Brown's plan for insulation in all homes is a step in the right direction, this alone will not stave off a global temperature rise of two degrees centigrade.
Other necessary actions will include decarbonising the power sector, transport sector, heat sector and industry.
According to the Energy Saving Trust, cavity insulation could not only reduce carbon dioxide emissions but also cut domestic heating costs by 15 per cent.
